Smearing Birthday Cake on Face

I am going to share something that pesters me a lot on birthdays – mine or someone else’s as well.

Its the not-so fun ritual of applying cake all over the birthday person’s face just after he/she cuts it. Someone just cuts a big sliver slyly and applies it all over the face sudenly – I mean for gags like this don’t we Indians have a perfect festival called Holi?

Ewwwwwwwwwwww

Ewwwwwwwwwwww

I mean why why why waste an awesome cake by applying it on the face????????????????

Reasons why I am totally against this are:

1. My parents always taught the importance of having food in our lives. Whenever I have declined to drink milk or eat my fruits I have been reminded gently of how fortunate I am to have the luxury of enjoying my meals.

2. My dad specially always told me one thing which I still remember clearly. He told me that if we waste food in our life, we have to pick it up from our eyelashes in hell. I was always scared of this as the visual itself is quite scary so I try my best to never wastefood.

3. We are very fortunate to have the luxury of cutting cake and celebrate birthday in grandeur style so why waste in name of a not so funny gag. 😦

4. It spoils the floor/carpet. The poor birthday person/host spends hours and hours to cook and tidy up the house before the party and the gag just makes it messy.

5. If you have to go out somewhere straight after the gag, the quick wash doesn’t clears the smell of cream and eggs from your face, hands, neck and most important your hair. (Happened to me on my 20th, I went out for lunch after my friends smeared cake in large chunks all over me and the smell just refused to go and unfortuantely I had second party in the evening and the smell of eggs and cream made me nauseous)

6. In my case, I generally make birthday cakes for people who are special to my heart and if someone attempts to do the gag with my labour of 6-7 hours man I will be disappointed. 😦

While we are on the topic of cakes, on my bro’s 9th birthday I sat on his cake! And yeah offcourse by mistake…the power went off…he was very angry; well obviously 😉 and my grand dad went out and after lots of efforts finally found a new cake from a bakery!!!

People think I am too uptight when I show my disapproval for this gag, they think I am too sophisticated and killjoy to enjoy the fun behind the gag. To me its plain silliness and lack of maturity.

What do you think? Is it really fun to do this or am I really being too uptight and killjoy?

  2. Refreshing to see this post. I thought something was wrong with me…why do I think it is silly and insensitive when others think it’s fun?? Usually, abroad when they smear food on someone, it is to show anger and disrespect, Some fool thought it was cool and other fools follow it as a new tradition! That’s all. They will soon get over this amusement, the pathetic depressed lot that I find this group of IT people and their hopeless so-called IT culture disgusts me to the core sometimes. I pity them. I just hope they don’t invent so new more ridiculous practices!!

  3. And whats with wishing people at 12 am ? Cant you wait till they wake up and do it like everyone else. I mean if that person is awake and you know them really well thats alright but for fuxake dont call ypur cousins who you meet once a year to wish them at midnight and for heavens sake cant indians turn off their phones when they go into a cinema hall or temple, its like a compulsive disorder than every call needs to be answered, also no concept of voicemail ? How about leaving an sms which doesnt involve some lame ass joke or a shayari – a real message, not whatsapp faces or anything. And please dont talk while driving, only lawyers in the US can afford to do it since they can pay the fines. Fock all Indians – you are all dirty and disgusting And casteist

  4. Most indians are idiots who just are really very stupid, i mean why smear cake on others when u can eat it and burthday bumps is another stupidity that indian coolies revel in wherever they go. For all our hypocrisy we cant go out in public and have a decent drink outside. It has to be either at a seedy dhaba or in a posh restaurant, no inbetween pub (no real public houses in India) . Can u imagine there is no word for ‘cheers/salud’ in India. There are dinner etiquettes, people arrive piss drunk at the table and finish in 15 mins and let out a serious of belches, no proper dessert or a nice sweet dish, its either those dirty fried indian sweets, like gulab jamun or jalebi or too milky rasgulla. Indians cant relax even while eating, the food is too spicy causing one to snort or blow nose while eating accompanied by loud talking while chewing food.

  5. I totally agree with you. I love cakes. I bake them with joy and enjoy hours decorating them. This practice of smearing cake on the face is just not my thing. Detestable!

  6. lovely one .. The point abt wasting food scares me now that i know.. And i completely suppprt u on this 🙂

  7. Completely agree with you…
I really dont know how this custom originated, but is surely a thing we can live without…
In fact, just a few days ago, I wrote a blog against food wastage.. you can check it out if you find time..

  8. Hey everyone! I’m back from New Jersey, and fully got the website up to date, and I even finished screenshotting all the catalogs I still needed to do! So starting tomorrow, I’ll be working on that. I hope to be done with all the catalogs by the end of July, although I have nearly 300 MB of catalog pictures to upload…..

Anyway, we updated a ton of pages. They Club Penguin fansite include the following lists/guides: Club Penguin Event Log, Item List, and the Dance/Wave/Sit List

And the following pages: Servers, Elite Penguin Force, (with a new video) Issue 194, Club Penguin Blog, Desktop Backgrounds, Website Banners, and 101 Days of Fun. Enjoy!

  9. No, I don’t think you’re being uptight or killjoy. I absolutely hate this ritual too. I don’t know what fun one gets out of it. I mean, you spend ages trying to look good on your birthday and in the end you end up with a cake smeared face and ruined clothes. I remember how several times I would refuse to cut the cake until certain people who I knew would do this would promise me that they won’t. But they never kept their promise. So I resorted to cutting the cake, running towards the bathroom before anyone could lay their hands on me and lock myself there. Talk about fun on your birthday. :-/

  10. @vjkrishna – thanks for your comment and welcome to my blog.

I liked the point that you raised abotu the dress. How did I miss this one? 😉
Its not the question of age I think, after all whatever the age may be we are never too old to blow the candles, make a wish and enjoy the yummy cake? 🙂

  11. I too hate the smearing ritual. It is no fun. It is disgusting and annoying. It’s a big downer. That kind of discourages you from being in your best dress on that day. Anyway, I think I’ve grown too old for these things!
